There were a lot of heros in my young life. Cowboy heros, like the Lone Ranger and Roy Rogers. All of my uncles. And, my dad. But, there was only one super hero. He was from another planet. His name was Superman.
When I was very young, my dad would find the Superman radio program for me. A few years later, I was watching Superman fly in black and white on our new television set. But, the Superman comics were in color, and I had every one.
Then came the Superman movies starring Christopher Reeve. Superman did not look and act as much like Superman as did Christopher Reeve. There was no doubting that Reeve was Superman. Or, was he? After all, he was just a lucky actor who fell into a great role. Or, did he?
And then, there was a terrible accident. Reeve broke his neck in a freak horse riding accident. He was instantly transformed from a vital movie star into a near lifeless, completely broken, completely dependent person.
In his book, Nothing is Impossible: Reflections on a New Life, Revee recounts the tradegy. And, the hopes, failures, challenges, and successes of his new life. I had the good fortune to listen to the audio book, read by Reeve. Listening to Reeve is a beyond moving experience.
The next time you feel mistreated by life, take a pause. Read, or better, listen to Reeve's story. You will never think the same about your bad luck ever again.
Was Reeve just a lucky actor who fell into a great role? Hardly. Christopher Reeve is, and forever will be Superman's Superman!
