In Play Poker Like the Pros, Phil Hellmuth, Jr. treats us to a full banquet of diverse poker strategy, poker theory, poker style, and poker history for not one, but for almost every form of modern poker.
Hellmuth's book includes chapters on limit, pot-limit, and no-limit hold'em, omaha, seven-card stud, variations of all for beginner through advanced play, tournaments, and on-line play. Plus, he often compares his winning strategies with the winning strategies of other top players. This is, indeed, a one-man encyclopedia of expert poker instruction.
Here are a few of Hellmuth's no-limit hold'em gems of wisdom:
"One excellent rule for NLH is this: if you can't allow yourself to fold the best hand, then you can't win." Page 147.
"Anyone who makes one weak raise can be expected to make one more." Page 148.
"Sliding a mountain all-in to try to win a molehill takes away all your options and is a very risky play as well." Page 154.
While it is important to develop and refine your own playing style, emulating the master would not be a bad start. So, I would recommend reading and absorbing all of Hellmuth's books.
