I owe inspiration for this post to Chuck Norris. Read his excellent book, The Secret Power Within - Zen Solutions to Real Problems, and you too will understand (Grasshopper).
1) Winning by Yielding. "When you are attacked, you give way just enough to unbalance your opponent, and then turn the attack to your advantage by using skill or strategy." Page 30.
2) Becoming Yourself. "Conquering yourself is a slow, often arduous, process, but it can be done by maintaining discipline and respect for yourself and others." Page 38.
3) Stay with the Moment. "Living in the present without permitting thoughts of the past or concerns for the future to intrude requires a special kind of concentration and focus." Page 41.
4) Winning by Losing. "You can't win in a tournament if you lose your mental control, and pretty much the same thing can be said for the rest of life." Page 49-50.
5) Control Your Emotions. "You control your thoughts by concentrating on what's at hand, what really is the issue, not on what you imagine to be the issue." Page 65
6) Calming the Moving Mind. "A calm mind is the real secret to success under stress, because a mind that is not calm will fail to perceive correctly." Page 101.
These are only a few of his many helpful thoughts. They were selected for their wisdom and poker relevance. Poker pro Howard Lederer counsels players to maintain mental control by 'playing the hand-at-hand'. This is a theme you will find in the chapter, Stay with the Moment, and throughout Norris' book.
I grew up on a steady diet of hero, good guys: Roy Rogers, the Lone Ranger, and Superman. Role model characters who stood for all the right things. Like strength, honesty and justice. Chuck Norris is a modern day hero, good guy.
