Tournament Poker And The Art Of War by David Apostolico is one of my favorites. Probably, because it introduced me to a whole new way of thinking about a Sit n Go poker tournament. And, because it introduced me to someone I had heard of, but never met, Sun-Tzu.
Well, we will not be meeting Sun-Tzu in person. But, his book, The Art Of War, lives on 2500 years later. This book has had a profound influence on practically every form of strategic thinking. Certainly upon war, business, and politics. And, now poker.
In his book, David interprets Sun-Tzu's many war strategies into poker tournament strategies. And, develops ten tournament principles. The ten are well worth repeating, but I particularly like the eighth principle:
"In No Limit Hold'em Tournaments, you cannot afford to to wait for every factor to be in your favor in order to make a play for the pot. Stay abreast of the situation so that you may take calculated risks to create an edge where none is perceived." So true.
We all owe David a debt of gratitude for this effort. Bringing Sun-Tzu's many strategies to life as poker tournament principles and strategies was a very difficult task. We tournament players are all the beneficiaries. (But, only those who read his book.)
