After a year, I have finished reading Your Performing Edge: The Complete Mind-Body Guide to Excellence in Sports, Health and Life by JoAnn Dahlkoetter, Ph.D. This negative sounding introduction is not meant as a comment against this book. The trouble is that there have been a lot of poker books released that needed reading. Instead, it means that this was a book that I always wanted to come back to. And, for good reason. Your Performing Edge is the most thorough treatment of mental preparation for competition that I have read. There is not an angle or aspect of mental training that is not covered.
If you think of success in poker as achieving both self-control and game knowledge, then you already appreciate the importance of the mental side of poker. The same mental discipline required for athletics is also required for poker. Athletics is a mind-body sport. Poker is a mind or mental sport. Distraction wreaks the same havoc in both. And, so does tilt. Dahlkoetter's book teaches us how to overcome all the mental roadblocks to successful competition.
Dr. Dahlkoetter also maintains a very helpful website at YourPerformingEdge.com.
