Still looking for your signature or critical path in life? The path that would be most satisfying, most fulfilling, most rewarding. The one that your heart wants to follow. In his book, Your Signature Path: Gaining New Perspectives on Life and Work, Geoffrey M. Bellman offers the criteria to help you find your life's path.
But, one section really caught my imagination. Bellman identified eight criteria for judging whether an activity would be considered as play. Naturally, if we think of an activity as play, the more likely that we have found a match for our signature path.
Which obviously begs the question: poker as play? Come on. We are serious adults. We don't play. Or, do we?
Here are the eight criteria. Judge for yourself. Is poker your play, and maybe your signature path?
1) See the activity as play.
2) Return to it over the years.
3) Requires action and movement that can be seen by you or others.
4) It takes time to do. To prepare, to follow up, to do it.
5) It is hard. Requires struggles. Discouragement, as well as satisfaction.
6) Builds skill and knowledge in the activity over time.
7) Drawn to thinking about it, even when not doing it.
8) Shared with others. Talk with others about it, or engage with others in doing it.
How did you do? I scored a perfect eight. Guess that's why I (we) call it playing poker! Remember poker is a game. It is fun. And, for many people it is a professional calling. Maybe, it is yours, too.
